Transitioning into a clean skincare routine
At Kind, we believe that what you apply to your skin is as important as what you put in your body.
This idea is well-supported given that the skin plays such a huge role in your overall health. Not only does your skin serve as a protective barrier, it also regulates temperature and produces vitamin-D to help prevent conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
As your body’s biggest organ, it has been reported that over 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into the bloodstream. It is important to note that this figure is based on scientific trials utilising solvent compounds, which have an increased ability to permeate the skin’s protective barrier. The rate of chemical absorption can also differ significantly depending on the size and concentration of the chemical, the area of exposed skin and environmental factors such as temperature. However, in spite of these variables, one thing remains true; what you put on your skin has the potential to end up in your bloodstream - a scary thought.
This is why it is important to be mindful of what you’re applying to your skin.
To us, this means avoiding harmful, toxic ingredients.
This includes sulphates, parabens and other nasties such as formaldehyde, synthetic fragrance or known carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals). Not only do these chemicals have the ability to break down the skin’s protective barrier, causing irritation and increased sensitivity, but some have also been found to disrupt hormone function (these are known as endocrine disruptors). We would recommend looking out for these types of ingredients and avoiding. Instead, we recommend looking for untainted natural ingredients such as natural clays, oils and butters.
We are proud to say that all products listed on the Kind website are non-toxic. All ingredients are listed under the product, and our ingredient page explores some of the most popular ingredients used in our product range.
So, where do you start?
Given the many benefits of a clean beauty routine, it is no wonder you want to get started. However, as with any routine change, this transition can seem overwhelming at first. To start off, we would recommend switching in one product at a time - this will give your skin the chance to gradually familiarise with new ingredients. Start with a product you use every day, such as a cleanser or moisturiser as these will have the most impact in your routine.
